1. Do you have to be a music major to be in the choirs?

No. The Choirs are open to non-majors as well as music majors.


2. Prior to joining a choir, is an audition required?

All new singers are auditioned for placement purposes. Singers who seek choral scholarships must sing (memorized) an art song, spiritual, or aria which showcase their voice. The singer’s musicianship will also be evaluated in the areas of sight singing and ear training.


3. How do I schedule and audition?

Contact one of the directors to schedule an audition.


4. How frequently do you perform?

The choirs, especially the Concert Choir maintains a rigorous performance schedule.


5. What types of music do you sing?

The Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and Spartan Chorale, specialize in the music of many genres—anthems, motets, madrigals, spirituals, gospels. The Voices of Inspiration specialize in the performance of gospel and contemporary sacred music.


6. Does the choir travel?

While all of the choirs travel and perform in churches and venues throughout the country, the Concert Choir is noted for its fall and spring tours. In addition, weekend tours and concerts are scheduled within the region, the Commonwealth, and beyond.




The University

Founded in 1935, Norfolk State University is an urban institution located in the heart of Hampton Roads, the seaboard hub of Virginia. With an enrollment of 7,000 and a student-teacher ratio of 14:1, the University’s mission is to provide an affordable, high-quality education for an ethnically and culturally diverse student population, equipping them with the capability to become productive citizens who continually contribute to the global and rapidly changing society. NSU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges.


The School

The School of Liberal Arts embraces ten academic departments in the fine and performing arts, humanities, and social sciences. The departments are English and Foreign Languages, Fine Arts, ROTC, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Music, Mass Communications and Journalism, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.


The Department

The Music Department offers the bachelor’s degrees in Music Media and Music Education. The Masters of Music degree in performance, theory-composition, and music education is also offered. The Department is comprised of 165 majors, 17 full-time professors,
and 8 part-time instructors.
